What skincare ingredients should you be wary of and what should you choose instead?
Your skin absorbs some of the chemicals it comes into contact with, this is why it is so important to be aware of what is called your “toxic load”. Women – who use on average 20 products per day on their skin – and increasingly men too, should be aware of cosmetic ingredients and what to avoid.
Many of these ingredients are traditionally seen as “safe” but actually, when used continually, they build up in the body. They are endocrine-disrupting phthalates or parabens. These can cause reproductive issues and have been linked to increased cancer-risk. The higher your toxic load, the more concentrated they become in your body.
You can dramatically lower this load by learning what to avoid and by perusing the labels on your chosen products. Carefully selecting products that don’t contain potentially harmful ingredients can help you maintain a clean body and healthy lifestyle. Try to choose products which are:
Free from harmful chemicals, man-made irritants and synthetic chemical preservatives
Non-allergenic GMO-free (genetically modified)
